Protect your pets from rabies for $10

Staff Report • Sep 19, 2018 at 9:25 AM

BLOUNTVILLE — Rabies vaccination clinics will be held throughout Sullivan County on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 6 p.m.

County residents can get their pets vaccinated for $10.

“Rabies is a preventable viral disease of mammals most often transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal that occurs in wild animals like raccoons, skunks, bats, and foxes,” according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. “Domestic animals account for less than 10 percent of the reported cases with cats, cattle and dogs most often reported rabid.”

Since the beginning of this year, there have been 26 positive cases of rabies in Tennessee. Of those 26 cases, Sullivan County has reported one skunk positive, and Greene County has reported two skunks positive. There are 14 other counties reporting positives in the state of Tennessee. Skunks account for 19 of those positives.

“The state has also had five bats, one raccoon and one dog test positive,” said Jerry Taylor, environmental health specialist with the Tennessee Department of Health.

Taylor also said it is essential to have all of your pets, outdoor and indoor, vaccinated against rabies.

Tennessee state law requires all dogs and cats 3 months of age or older receive and maintain current rabies vaccinations.

Last year, Tennessee reported 36 animals positive for rabies. Of those 36 animals, there were one cat, one dog, two fox, five raccoons, 10 bats and 17 skunks.

Sullivan County reported no positives for 2017, while Johnson County reported five raccoons and one skunk positive for rabies.

Greene County reported five skunks and one bat, while Hawkins County reported one skunk positive for rabies.
