GATE CITY — Rye Cove joined an exclusive group Thursday.

Led by Tyler Starnes’ 91, the Eagles shot a team score of 409 at Scott County Park to win a rare Cumberland District golf championship.

IT’S BEEN A WHILE

The win gave Rye Cove its first district championship in six years.

“It’s been a while,” said Eagles coach Todd Baker. “It was a good win for us. The kids played good. I’m proud of them. We’ve got five seniors, so it was a good win for them. A good way to go out in the district.”

Rye Cove’s individual scores came from three seniors and underclassman Dalton Williams. The Eagles also tallied Michael Griffin’s 104, Chase Love’s 106 and Williams’ 108 to clinch the district title.

Rye Cove advanced to the Region 1D championships scheduled for Thursday at Cedar Hill Country Club in Jonesville.

Castlewood edged Twin Springs 441-444 to claim the district’s second seed and regional berth. Coleman Cook led the Blue Devils with a 97, and Tanner Dingus paced Twin Springs with a 99.

SPARTAN GETS A MEDAL

Eastside’s Noah Stout shot 85 to earn medalist honors and was one of the three individuals to advance to the regionals from the Cumberland. The Spartans didn’t compete as a team they field only three golfers and a minimum of four is required.

Joining Stout as individual Region 1D qualifiers were Tanner Dingus and Josh Lane of Twin Springs. Dingus shot a 99 and Lane had a 107.
